The burden to determine the “value” of your donations is up to you. The charity you donate your stuff to is not responsible for telling you the value of your donations.
Fortunately, there are some great resources for figuring out the donation value:
- The Salvation Army Valuation Guide and the Goodwill Valuation Guide lists the sales prices of typical donations. Note: These are easy to use, but may not offer a maximum tax deduction.
- Visit eBay, Craigslist, or the Amazon resellers to determine what your donated clothing and household goods would sell for online. Note: this is the BEST way to value your donations, but it is time intensive.
- TurboTax It’s Deductible is a great software tool to value your donations. Note: the software pulls values from eBay Marketplace Data. It’s an easy way to get the maximum tax deduction for your charitable donations.
